Italian company GF Group has said it is 'hopeful' of being successful in its bid to operate a new 4,000m2 logistics platform for fresh produce consignments which is being developed alongside the new Genoa Wholesale Market at Bolzaneto in Liguria, north-east Italy.
As reported by Il Sole 24 Ore, the new market is due to open its doors this September, replacing the old Corso Sardegna market in the north of the city.
'We haven't yet had official confirmation that we've won the race to manage part of the market's logistics platform, but we have taken part in the bidding and we are hopeful of being given the space,' GF Group's president Antonio Orsero told the newspaper.
The platform will be used to handle produce arriving and leaving for distribution both in Genoa and across the whole of Italy.
The company also plans to use the facility to ripen bananas, Mr Orsero confirmed, before packaging them and sending them out on trucks.
'We have a presence in all of Italy's important fresh produce markets and in Genoa we couldn't really miss out,' Mr Orsero added.
