New figures for 2024 show year-on-year increase in both volume and value
Spain’s imports of fresh fruit and vegetables grew by 6 per cent in volume and 12 per cent in value last year.
Volumes came in at 4.3mn tonnes in 2024, while value stood at just over €5bn.
The figures were drawn from customs data and processed by Fepex.
Vegetables imports climbed by 15 per cent in volume and 12.5 per cent in value, up to 2.1mn tonnes and €1.59bn respectively.
Topping the vegetable list was potatoes with 17 per cent higher volumes and 19 per cent growth in value, amounting to 1.27mn tonnes and €561mn.
In the fruit segment, import volumes were on a similar level to 2023, with a slight decrease of 0.4 per cent to 2.2mn tonnes.
Imported fruit value soared 11 per cent , up to €3.14bn.
Bananas was the most imported fruit, followed by avocados with 262,071 tonnes and €635.5mn, growth of 8 per cent and 22 per cent respectively.
Other notable categories were oranges, with 225,703 tonnes (down 4 per cent) and €145mn (down 23 per cent); apples with 192,501 tonnes (down 12 per cent) and €194mn (down 0.4 per cent); and pineapples, with 185,888 tonnes (up 2.7 per cent) and €166mn (up 11 per cent).
The data also showed a positive trend in the average price of imported fruit and vegetables, which climbed from €1.09 per kg to €1.14 per kg.
