Italy's pear crop forecast for the coming season has been revised downward, with producers saying recent summer drought conditions are likely to have contributed to a further reduction in volumes.

According to the agency CSO, the promotions committee of Italy's interprofessional pear body has noted an additional 6-7 per cent decrease as a result of a previously unrecorded fall in supply of the Williams variety.

That is likely to mean this year's Italian pear crop will be around 30 per cent lower overall at approximately 640,000 tonnes, compared with the previous year's figure of 915,000 tonnes.

An earlier estimate published at the annual topfruit meeting Prognosfruit had predicted a 22 per cent fall in Italian pear output to 717,000 tonnes.
