Frutesa –one of Guatemala’s leading fruit producer-exporters – plans to launch the Mayan Meyer lemon on the European market this year.
The group hopes to have the first volume of the variety ready for export at the end of 2012, in time for the Christmas period, deputy general manager Clark MacDonald told Trade Latin America.
The variety, which is native to China, is a cross between a lemon and a mandarin, and has become popular in the catering industry thanks to its flavour.
“Meyer lemons have a sweet somewhat less acidic taste than ordinary lemons, and almost double the juice content,” Macdonald explained.
