Fruits de Ponent has appealed for closer collaboration among producers to counter to the growing concentration of retail power in Europe. Speaking at an event to mark the end of the cooperative’s 25th anniversary in Lleida’s Seu Vella, president Sebastià Escarp gave his backing for cooperativism s the model of the future in the fresh produce industry.
Escarp praised the efforts of producers, who he said went the extra mile 365 days a year, often for little reward, and urged them to “ face the future with optimism”.
Throughout its 25-year history, Fruits de Ponent has been at the forefront of stonefruit production in Catalonia, exporting to 50 countries across four continents.
In recent years it has diversified its offer, adding top fruit, olive oil and fruit juices in order to guarantee a year-round presence in the market.
