The Port of Antwerp in Belgium has recorded a 3.8 per cent fall in the volume of fruit handled from January to March 2008 to 324,698 tonnes.

Overall freight volumes rose by 3.4 per cent to just over 46m tonnes, according to a press release.

Container volume handled by the port was up by 7 per cent, compared with the first quarter of 2007, to 24.3m tonnes, and the Deurganck dock recorded a 39.2 per cent growth in volumes handled.

Conventional breakbulk freight, meanwhile, fell by 13.3 per cent to 4.3m tonnes, while ro/ro volumes grew by 6.4 per cent to 1.2m tonnes.
