According to research from the UK's Bristol University, those who consume the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day are more attractive than those who do not.
Published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, the study discovered that fruit and vegetables gave people a healthy-looking tan.
Lead researcher Dr Ian Stephen, commented: 'Most people think the best way to improve skin colour is to get a suntan, but our research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is actually more effective.'
Researchers revealed further that those getting their recommended intake were more likely to have a higher presence of red and yellow antioxidants, known as carotenoids, which help to support the immune system and fertility.
Carotenoids are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, yellow and red peppers, spinach, carrots, apricots and melons.
