Association plans to source workers from Colombia, Ecuador and Honduras as well as Morocco this season
Freshuelva, the Association of Producers and Exporters of Strawberries from Huelva, travelled to Tangier this week to select 1,300 workers to join the province’s berry fruit harvesting campaign as part of the government’s recruitment drive.
The Freshuelva delegation, led by its president, Francisco José Gómez Macías, praised the excellent organisation of the process carried out by the Moroccan government.
“The collaboration and coordination between the Spanish and Moroccan administrations has been fundamental to guarantee the success of this process. These workers are essential to cover the needs of our campaign and allow Huelva to continue being a world reference in the production of red fruits”, Gómez said.
The workers selected in Morocco will start work on the harvest next March. They will join the repeat workers from previous campaigns, whose arrival in Huelva is planned for the end of January and the first weeks of February.
In an bid to diversify the origin of its workforce and guarantee the success of the campaign, Freshuelva announced plans to move soon to Colombia, Ecuador and Honduras. During the second week of January, the Association’s labour department team will select a total of 380 workers in these countries.
This is the second consecutive year in which Freshuelva is carrying out selection processes in Colombia, after the successful incorporation of 500 workers last season. These are joined by workers from Honduras and Ecuador, whose participation dates back to the 2022 and 2023 campaigns and will continue in 2024. Repeat workers from these countries will arrive in Huelva from February on weekly flights.
