Spanish company Freshdeal has merged with New York City-based Fruitspot to expand its efforts to connect fresh produce buyers and sellers online.

The move adds to the company’s current offices in Valencia, Spain, and Tauberbischofsheim, Germany, in addition to its team of country managers in North and Latin America.

“This choice was a really obvious one,” the company stated. “Our combined people, experience, technology and resources place us in an even better position to help professionals in the produce industry connect and trade, faster.”

With around 2,600 companies currently using the platform, the group asserts to have been responsible for more than €46m in new business.

“We have designed Freshdeal to match the reliable buyers and sellers, so they can spend less time searching, discover more opportunities, and start conversations more easily,” said Freshdeal’s co-CEO and CMO, Jose Baptista.

“With these features,” added Freshdeal CEO José Manuel Donate, “we’ll be able to optimise the balance between supply and demand and we will receive updated information regarding the needs and searches of our users.”

Freshdeal has also become a partner of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), after the UN recognised the potential of the platform for reducing food waste as a result of market inefficiencies.
