Award-winning packaging solution from Multivac

Multivac will be presenting an award-winning tray package for the convenience food sector at FRESHCONEX. This packaging is the product of close collaboration with partners from the retail trade and industry. The idea: A single-portion pack with a separate built-in fork compartment attached to the side of the dish. The unique selling point of this idea is that the packaging can be produced in a single process using the Traysealer T 700. This innovation has already earned the product the Swiss Star Award 2009. The Allgau-based specialist for complete and sustainable packaging solutions has thus provided yet more proof of how effectively the FreshSafe concept can be applied to a solution tailored to each customer's needs.

A fresh-cut apple snack from VOG Products

The fresh-cut apples snacks from VOG Products, the association which processes and markets produce from South Tyrol fruit cooperatives, are 80-gram sealed packs that stay fresh for at least 14 days without the use of any additional preservatives. The secret to the longevity of these South Tyrol apple snacks lies in the manufacturing process. VOG Products' Arno Welponer explains that the apple slices are dipped in a solution of calcium ascorbate before packaging to ensure that they don't turn brown when placed inside the bag. 'Calcium ascorbate is the calcium salt of vitamin C and therefore has the same effect as when you put a drop of lemon juice on your fruit salad or freshly peeled apples at home. It's therefore a very natural way to keep apples from turning brown, ensuring that they taste as if they had just been cut – right up until the best-before date, Welponer says. Trade fair visitors will also be able to try these apples. The tasty snack will be distributed free of charge in all Messe Berlin shuttle buses.

FRESHCONEX premiere: Carrot Fettuccini from Italy

The product range supplied by Aureli Mario, the carrot specialist from Abruzzo region of Italy, impressively demonstrates how many ways the humble carrot can be put to use. From fresh carrots to juice, concentrate and purees to ready-to-eat foods such as baby carrots, julienne carrots and carrot sticks for the retail market. Aureli's latest creation, developed in association with licensee La Linea Verde S.p.A., is carrot fettuccini. This convenience food consisting of thin, 25-30-centimetre strips of carrots are tasty as a snack, in salads or cooked. Indeed the novel idea was named one of the trade fair's nine most innovative products by the FRUIT LOGISTICA Innovation Award panel of experts. Baby carrots in three different colours – yellow, orange and purple – are another new item in the Aureli product range.

Pomegranate juice finally available without that bitter taste

The Israeli company Hefestus LtD is celebrating its debut at FRESHCONEX with two groundbreaking products. One is a production solution that for the first time enables pomegranates to be separated cleanly into their constituent parts (skin, pulp and seeds), the other is its patented SLM™ technology, which prolongs the shelf-life of fresh-cut fruit. 'Our processing solution for pomegranates now enables the juice industry to press pomegranate juice solely from the seeds,' says Oded Shtemer, President and CEO of Hefestus. As a result, the juice is not bitter since it does not contain any skin or pulp, which are rich in tannin and thus give pomegranate juice a bitter taste. The SLB™ ('Shelf Life Booster') technology helps keep cut fruit and vegetables fresh significantly longer without vacuum packaging.

Water-saving flotation washing machine from FTNON

This machine minimises water consumption and still does an excellent job of cleaning. 'The new machine has good clearing capabilities, which means less loss of product and faster cleaning. It also generates less wastewater. These solutions lead to significant savings in terms of water and operating costs,' says FTNON General Manager Wilco Fauth.
