Fresh Express has announced that it is voluntarily recalling a number of salad products containing Romaine lettuce, as they have the potential to be contaminated with E. coli.
Chiquita's specialist pre-packaged salad operation said that its was recalling as a precaution Romaine lettuce products with expired use-by dates of 8-12 July and an 'S' in the product code, while no other Fresh Express Salads were included in the recall.
According to Fresh Express, no illnesses have been reported in association with recall, which was being conducted to reach retailers as well as consumers, with the group's customer service representatives contacting a majority of retailers to confirm that the products are not in the stream of commerce.
'The recall notification is being issued out of an abundance of caution due to an isolated instance in which one package of Fresh Express Hearts of Romaine salad yielded a positive result for E. coli O157:H7 in a random sample test, conducted and collected by a third-party laboratory for the US Food and Drug Administration,' an FDA statement read.
