Sales of fresh cut fruit and vegetables from Spain have risen by 7 per cent during the first six months of 2008 compared with the same period a year before, according to new data from Spanish fresh cut producer association Afhorla.

The group said that sales during the first half of the year reached 32,292 tonnes, of which fresh cut vegetables – the most developed part of the sector in Spain – accounted for 31,775 tonnes.

The Spanish fresh cut sector is now worth an estimated €200m of which 95 per cent is accounted for by Afhorla member companies, according to the association.

Afhorla was formed in 2004 with the objective of responding to the needs of the sector, as well as driving growth and expansion. The organisation’s members include a number of leading Spanish producers including Kernel Export, Primaflor, Verdifresh and Vega Mayor.
