Fresh & Easy Neighbourhood Market, the US operation of UK retail giant Tesco, is to close 12 stores temporarily after failing to register satisfactory sales or customer growth.
The move follows a review of its overall store portfolio, Planet Retail reported, as it looks to move towards profitability in the country, although the closed stores are expected to reopen when 'economic and business conditions warrant'.
Stores to be closed are located in Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, and follow similar closures in 2010 when 13 outlets were boarded up.
However, a spokesman for the group said that it would open 25 Fresh & Easy stores between January and the end of March, noting: 'For every store we're closing temporarily, we are opening two'.
