Fresh and Easy store

Philip Clarke, the chief executive of global retail giant Tesco, has offered his backing to the group's US arm Fresh & Easy.

The chain continues to make a loss in the country, and Clarke himself has previously answered investor calls to close the branch by saying that Tesco would exit the country if the struggle continued.

However, speaking at the World Retail Congress this week, Clarke said Fresh & Easy was 'fighting nicely' despite the tough conditions in the US, noting that the chain was only five years old and was 'worth persisting with', Reuters reported.

While the group has slowed its expansion in the US, Clarke has said that he expects Fresh & Easy to break even in 2013/14.
