In France, consumption of peaches and nectarines has recorded a considerable decline this year, according to national agriculture organisation FranceAgriMer.

Between 27 December and 10 July, household consumption averaged 2.15kg, representing a drop of some 10.7 per cent compared with the 2006-2010 average.

In addition, the amount spent on peaches and nectarines over this same period stood at €5.20 per household, down 9.8 per cent compared with 2006-2010.

Imports of peaches and nectarines have also seen a reduction this year, according to FranceAgriMer, standing at 50,048 tonnes, be that a drop of 10 per cent compared with the 2006-2010 average.

The decrease in consumption has been attributed to the earliness of the season, with the harvest arriving around two to three weeks early, as well as the cool temperatures experienced throughout July.
