The port of Hamburg handled 104m tonnes of seaborne freight in the first nine months of 2017, according to its latest quarterly report.
At 6.8m TEUs, throughput of containerised general cargo continued to grow; while at 34.1m tonnes, bulk cargo throughput remained just below the previous year’s figure.
For Port of Hamburg Marketing, the strong trend in container traffic with Canada was described as a 'gratifying pointer'. The port’s marketing organization sees the CETA free trade agreement as providing an additional boost for seaborne trade that will benefit the Port of Hamburg.
'Once ratified by the parliaments of EU countries, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada that provisionally came into force on 21 September will simplify foreign trade,' the group said.
For 2017, the Port of Hamburg’s marketing organisation expects total seaborne freight handling of 138m tonnes and container traffic of around 8.9m TEUs, with results equalling the previous year’s level
