Last week, France's secretary of state for trade, Hervé Novelli, announced the publication of a decree guaranteeing the better display of the origin of fruits and vegetables on labels.

'From now on,' he explained in a press release, 'for any display of prices at point of sale, the mention of a product's origin will appear, in a way that is both visible and legible, in characters of a size equal to that of the price indication.'

This, Mr Novelli said, would make it easier for consumers to know where their fruit and vegetables come from, helping them to make an informed decision based on quality, price and responsible buying.

This measure 'responds to the consumer's need for information during a sensitive time for fruit and vegetable producers', said Mr Novelli.
