The number of food recalls in Canada has climbed 24 per cent to 263 in the past year.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) told FoodNavigator-USA that it expects the trend to continue as it recruits more inspectors and increases the frequency of testing under its five-year Food Safety Action Plan.
The CFIA already employs 4,898 people, up from 4,165 five years ago.
It has been working hard in the aftermath of a 2008 listeriosis outbreak – traced back to deli meats – to overhaul Canada's food safety structure.
