Florette has revealed that it is joining forces with two farmers in Spain to create what it has described as two of the largest glasshouses for crops in the country.
The prepared salads group has said that the glasshouses cover an area of 150,000m2, and represent an investment of €5m, with early development now underway and the second phase expected to begin next February.
Just-Food reported that the facilities, which are located in the village of Cadreita, Navarra, will produce some 1,300 tonnes of vegetables per year once complete, doubling Florette's annual production and creating 20 new jobs.
Products to be grown at the new facilities include arugula, watercress and lettuce, which will then be distributed across Spain and Portugal.
Florette director of agriculture Jorge Moreno told the publication that the facilities would produce 'first quality' vegetables throughout the year.
Meanwhile, the planned opening of Florette's new facility in Gran Canaria has been pushed back until April next year, with work still ongoing. Once complete, it will produce some 2m bags of Florette salad per year.
