In the Netherlands, Ens-based berry breeder Flevo Berry has launched its new Magnus strawberry, described as having a 'structural improvement for the late season'.
The goal behind the group's breeding programme was to develop a strawberry similar in appearance to previous varieties, witha good taste, but a different seasonality.
According to Flevo Berry, Magnus has a similar seasonality to the Malwina, but has a higher yield, keeps its bright red colour and is tolerant to most root and leaf diseases.
'The name Magnus is a true representation of its character,' the group explains. 'Coming from Northern Europe it is therefore tough and hardened, with its powerful root system standing strong. Flevo Berry will continue to gain further practical experience with Magnus and create useful information for growers.'
