Higher prices compensate for drop in volumes and indications are that production will bounce back in 2025
The 2024 Peruvian avocado campaign will close positively despite the challenging production scenario. Consultancy FreshFruit Peru said shipments are expected to end the year on 591,000 tonnes, worth US$1.27bn.
Last year’s El Niño complicated the development of the 2024 crop, causing issues with sizing and yield.
To the end of September, volumes were down 9 per cent on the year-earlier period at almost 587,000 tonnes. However, firmer international prices – resulting from the lower supply – meant the export value grew 23 per cent to US$1.26bn. This season prices averaged close to US$2.15 per kilogram, 34 per cent higher than in the previous campaign.
Early forecasts suggest volumes will bounce back in 2025, with shipments growing by 15-20 per cent on this year.
