Around two hundred firefighters in Warsaw have been tackling a major blaze at the country’s largest fresh produce trading centre, the Agri-food Wholesale Market in Bronisze.
Eurofruit understands that reports of the fire first emerged at approximately 2am on Wednesday 3 December.
The fire is thought to have started in a part of the fresh fruit and vegetable market used to store packaging and, at its peak, had engulfed half of a 200m-long building, making it difficult to get under control.
According to local reports, access to the site has been closed for the time being while investigators assess the damage and try to identify a possible cause.
Situated between Warsaw and Poznan, Bronisze Agri-food Wholesale Market’s fresh fruit and vegetable centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, excluding Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
The 35ha market was established in 1995 by a group of wholesalers that felt Warsaw needed a trading centre on a par with similar markets in Paris, Bologna and Lyon.
