Generic carrots

Produce World expects to meet its targets over the Christmas period despite unpredictable weather resulting in difficult growing conditions.

The UK-based vegetable supplier says it expects to supply 1,200 tonnes of carrots, with an estimated 6.3m individual carrots expected to be delivered to the supermarkets, and 1,200 tonnes of parsnips into retail over the Christmas period.

“Demand shows us that people still want to serve a variety of vegetables with their Christmas dinners, and this is reflected through the supermarkets, with demand for potatoes increasing by 50 per cent from November to December,' said Jason Burgess, farming director at Produce World.

In another bumper season for Brussels sprouts, Produce World also says it will harvest, pack and distribute 1.5m kg nationwide, and cabbage is also set to be a big hit this year, with Produce World expecting to deliver 6.3m of them in to supermarkets.

Burgess concluded: “At Produce World, innovation is a key part of our business and we are constantly reviewing the varieties grown and examining ways in which they can be improved.

'This innovation has lead to Produce World growing and supplying `Brussels` sprouts that are less bitter in taste.”
