NZ New Zealand green kiwifruit picking

In New Zealand, the independent body leading the kiwifruit industry's response to the outbreak of Psa, has issued a warning over the disease's impact on the green or Hayward kiwifruit variety.

Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) has said that the deadly disease, which has had a major impact on the gold variety across the country, could eventually hit the green variety if a pest management strategy is not implemented.

Barry O'Neill, chief executive of KVH, has said that a recent trip to Italy has opened his eyes to the need for a strategy offering effective management of Psa for green kiwifruit, Radio New Zealand reported.

Unlike in New Zealand, Psa has greatly affected green production, with O'Neill noticing instances of poor management including not cutting out infected material or applying crop protectant spray.

'My concerns are that if we don't continue to manage Psa effectively in New Zealand, we will see a similar situation play out in New Zealand,' he told Radio New Zealand.
