The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reported to have placed more Brazilian orange juice companies on Import Alert for the presence of Carbendazim/MBC, according to Benjamin England, founder and CEO of consulting firm FDAImports.com.

The FDA's Import Alerts database shows at least five Brazilian companies have been placed on Import Alert 99-08 in recent weeks.

This means that ports have been notified that they can detain shipments from certain companies without inspecting or laboratory-testing the goods.

However, England suggested that the naming of these companies was not a food safety issue.

'We routinely assist companies who have shipments detained or refused at US ports,' he said. 'It may come as a surprise for these companies, it may not, but the point is that FDA is issuing these Import Alerts for a non-compliance issue that is not related to food safety.'
