Sales of Fairtrade products in the UK grew by 40 per cent in 2010 to over £1bn (€1.17bn), in spite of the challenging economic environment, the Guardian newspaper reported.

The Fairtrade Foundation suggested that this huge sales increase displayed UK consumers' continued commitment to ethical values.

Sales of Fairtrade products in the UK were worth £1.1bn (€1.29bn) last year, up from £836m (€982m) in 2009, according to the Foundation.

Chief executive Harriet Lamb commented: 'It is fantastic to break the first billion. Fairtrade is going from strength to strength because the public want it, it makes business sense and, most importantly, because it's working for the millions of farmers, workers and their families who see Fairtrade as their lifeline in these tough times. They will be cheering to know that UK shoppers and businesses still care.'
