Austria's leading apple exporter Eva is optimistic of a high-quality crop this coming season, as it looks to bounce back from two 'challenging', frost-hit campaigns.
The Styria growing region enjoyed fine production conditions leading into the season, seeing a good spring with a mix of sunshine and rain.
'As around 95 per cent of our production is covered by hail nets, storms didn't cause much damage,' explained Roland Rosenzopf, managing director of Eva.
The group is expecting a significant increase in its main varieties Gala, Golden Delicious, Braeburn and Evelina. The first Gala have been harvested and the full Eva range will be available by November.
While the 'perfect' weather conditions had a positive effect on fruit development, current temperatures are expected to have a beneficial impact on colouration.
'We are happy and extremely positive, that there will be a steady demand for quality products which will be the foundation for a good marketing season,' noted Rosenzopf. 'We are fortunate to be able to harvest best-quality fruits this year and we therefore hope to retain all of our loyal Eva clients, and win back those who missed Eva Apples the last two seasons.'
