Maersk Line, the world's largest shipping group, has announced a set of freight rate increases on its northern Europe and western Mediterranean services to west Africa, effective 1 October 2009.

According to the Danish company, trading conditions for the carriers operating in these markets are currently subject to unacceptable rate levels, with the long-term situation unsustainable.

'The increases are necessary to continue to operate our services with the high level of reliability our customers have come to expect from Maersk Line,' the group said in a statement.

Rate changes on the northern Europe and western Mediterranean to west Africa services are:

- €150 per 20ft dry container
- €270 per 40ft dry container
- €150 per 20ft reefer container
- €270 per 40ft reefer container

Rate changes on the UK to west Africa services are:

- £130 per 20ft dry container
- £240 per 40ft dry container
- £130 per 20ft reefer container
- £240 per 40ft reefer container
