The European market will this week receive the first Peruvian Hass avocados of the season, as the South American country continues to cement its position as one of the leading suppliers to Europe.
Total Hass exports are tipped to reach 47,000 tonnes, while sendings of the green variety should amount to 5,000 tonnes.
This year, Peru will also export Hass avocados to the US for the first time, after the market recently opened up to Peruvian fruit, thereby widening the country’s marketing opportunities.
The first arrivals in Europe will be supplied by the South American country’s biggest exporter, Camposol, which is a co-packer for many of Europe’s leading avocado distributors, including Hall’s in the UK, Trops in Spain, and Black Sensation in Germany.
The group, which is the largest agroindustrial company in Peru, also supplies the fruit under its own brands: Camposol, Andes, Amazonas, and Sol Produce
Camposol owns 22,000ha of land in the northwest of Peru in the regions of La Libertad and Piura, of which only 6,000ha are currently planted, leaving considerable reserves for the company’s further consolidation and diversification into new products.
“Camposol is looking forward with great optimism to the new avocado season in Europe,” said chief commercial officer Michael Horney.
“Europe is a market which keeps on growing from year to year and has found in Camposol an important source of high quality produce.
“This is the result of our profound knowledge of avocados as well as our post-harvest processes, state of the art production systems and excellent climatic conditions.”
