Cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina can bring organic ginger closer to European market, where the popularity of the superfood continues to rise, says Dutch importer
Dutch organics supplier Eosta has revealed that it is working with two experienced partners on a new organic ginger project in central Europe. Now in its second year, the project is focused on the feasibility of ginger cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Eosta highlighted the growing popularity of ginger on the European market, most of which comes from distant sources like Peru and China, but this project will see organic ginger available “closer to home”, the company said.
“Ginger is not only healthy, but also adds a unique, spicy flavour to drinks and dishes,” Eosta stated. “Not only to tea, but also to lemonades, soup and Asian dishes. As ginger is often used freshly cut, the choice of an organic, unsprayed variety is quickly made.”
Eosta pointed out that rural Bosnia faces significant economic challenges, and that organic ginger cultivation can play a role in raising the incomes of small-scale farmers in the country.
“This year, organic seed stock has been imported from China for testing in tunnels,” Eosta revealed. “In late October, we expect the first harvest of fresh organic ‘baby ginger’. In the coming years, we will explore how to scale up the project and also start preserving ginger so that we can offer this organic ginger for a longer period of time.”
