With its Respiration Control System for extending the shelflife of fresh fruits and vegetables, Dutch company PerfoTec has been named as arunner-up at the European Business Awards for theEnvironment.
The awards were handed out on 1 December at the 17thEuropean Forum on Eco-innovation in Lyon, France.
The jury ratedPerfoTec as having high potential, because the group's technology 'proves that sustainability, in terms ofreducing food waste, and business performance go very well together'.
PerfoTec’s RespirationControl System extends the shelf life of fresh fruit and vegetables up to 100 per cent, the group notes, measuring theexact level ofoxygen needed for each product and adjusting the packaging accordingly withmicro-perforations.
Several retail pilots, including Marks & Spencer,show that this way in-store waste can bereduced by 50 per cent while increasingsales.

'The international recognition of the EBAE combined with thealready successful performance at retailers confirms our mission to implementthe PerfoTec system as theinternational standard for packing fruits andvegetables.”
