listeria

Imports of fruit and vegetables from South Africa have been readmitted into Egypt following their suspension in May after an outbreak of listeria killed over 200 people in South Africa.

Ayman Walash, head of press and information officer at the Egyptian Embassy in South Africa, expressed his full confidence in the measures initiated by the South African government to prevent further outbreaks.

He urged the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to take necessary steps to guarantee the non-spread of listeria bacteria to fresh fruit and vegetables exported to Egypt.

“We released the temporary suspension at the beginning of September,” he told Power 98.7. “South Africa can export agricultural products to Egypt with immediate effect.”
