The European Commission has updated a register of food imports that it feels require a high levels of safety checks following a quarterly review, with bananas originating from the Dominican Republic one of the products to be downgraded.
The measures were introduced at the start of the year in the EU in a bid to increase border controls on foods of non-animal origin, with the goal of improving food safety through a common set of rules on food control, Food Quality News reported.
Annex 1 of the regulations contains the products deemed to require the most scrutiny, with an increased frequency of checks on documentation, identity and physical condition.
While Dominican bananas have been dropped from Annex 1, a number of products, including some fruit and vegetables from Egypt and herbs from Thailand, have now been added.
