Netherlands-based cooperatives ZON and Royal FruitmastersGroup are currently investigating the possibility of a merger, according to a statement released today.
The proposal was discussed by representatives from both cooperatives during today's meetings, which initially sought simply to increase cooperation.
The members, employees, works councils, customers and trade unions have also been informed, according to the press release.
'Both cooperatives are active in the horticultural sector and provide the fruit and vegetable market with a range of products and services,' the statement said. 'Combining the organisations will allow ZON and Fruitmasters to respond more effectively to market demands.'
The move would boost the group's market penetration and commercial strength, while giving the group more distinctive added value. It is also expected that increased cost efficiency would lead to optimal payment prices and competitive rates for the member growers.
'Developments in the fruit and vegetable chain demand a greater scale of operation and a new role for the cooperative,' the statement said. 'A market trend of specialisation is apparent; but at the same time customers increasingly ask for a broad assortment of fruit and vegetables and new service concepts. As a combined force ZON and Fruitmasters expect to be able to respond better to this demand by offering an extensive and distinctive range that is sourced directly from the growers.
'ZON and Fruitmasters have become strong in their respective specialisms of vegetables and fruit. Together they can concentrate on innovation in the chain. Both organisations enjoy a long history as a cooperative, a comparable market philosophy and market strategy and share the importance they attach to involving their members.'
Over the coming months, this matter is set to be discussed further, the aim being to submit detailed plans to the individual General Members' Meetings of ZON and Fruitmasters before the summer.
