London Gateway Project

The chairman of DP World and Dubai World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, has become the first person to step on land created at the UK’s newest port and logistics development, London Gateway, as he witnessed the Dubai-based port operator’s new £1.5bn development get underway, according to Business Intelligence Middle East.

The project requires the deepening of the River Thames, which will allow the world’s largest trading vessels to deliver goods to the English capital.

The move will save UK companies significant transportation and distribution costs, as well as improving carbon footprints.

Over 65m freight miles will be saved every year, Business Intelligence Middle East stated, in addition to 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The logistics park will measure more than 9m sq ft, while the port, set to be one of the most automated and efficient in the world, will add an extra 3.5m TEU to the port capacity of the UK.

Construction is expected to take several years.
