Dole school garden launch

Greg France with Emmanuelle Chriqui

Dole Food Company has teamed up with the Environmental Media Association (EMA) and actress/advocate Emmanuelle Chriqui to dedicate a garden to Carson Senior High School in Los Angeles, the US.

Dole farmer Greg France, handed out strawberry seed packets and shared tips on sustainable farming while Ms Chriqui spoke to students about nutrition, according to a press release from the company.

The dedication is part of Dole Food Company’s larger effort to support gardens and greening in urban schools across Los Angeles – a city with one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the nation, Dole said.

“Our efforts align with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign and other programs that teach children about nutrition and sustainable living in an effort to combat the growing childhood obesity epidemic that is sweeping our nation, especially in underserved urban communities,” explained Marty Ordman, vice-president for marketing and communications at Dole.

“These gardens give students an opportunity to learn about sustainable living and nutrition while also linking these concepts things like reading, math and science,” added Debbie Levin, President, EMA.

Dole said it is working with further schools in the Los Angeles area to provide urban gardens and in-school salad bars.

Through its efforts, the company claims students from underserved communities are able to learn how to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diets through a unique and interactive approach.
