10th Avenue Marine Terminal Port of San Diego

Dole Food Company, one of the largest fresh produce groups in the world and the biggest tenant at the Port of San Diego's busiest terminal, could be close to signing a deal to stay at the port for a further 25 years.

The group has been linked with a move away from San Diego, with a lease that it can break this year and past talks to move to the Port of Hueneme near Oxnard.

However, a spokesmen for Dole and the San Diego Unified Port District have said this week that the company has formally notified the port of its intent to remain in its current spot, with the two sides said to be finalising the terms of a new lease.

Dole, which signed a 20-year lease at the port in 2002, brings in nearly 50,000 containers of fresh produce each year via the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal, which handled some 82 per cent of the port's cargo tonnage in 2011.
