New figures from market analyst Kantar Worldpanel have revealed that discount retailers Aldi and Lidl are increasing their market share in Ireland, with sales growing ahead of the grocery market.
According to Just-Food, the Kantar study showed that Aldi's sales increased by 27.5 per cent through the 12-week period to 17 April, with Lidl's sales up 8.3 per cent, against an Irish grocery market that grew by 1.1 per cent.
As a result of these sales, Aldi saw its market share climb to 4.2 per cent from 3.3 per cent, while Lidl's market share increased to 6.1 per cent from 5.7 per cent.
'Aldi and Lidl's growth seems to be driven by customers' increasing trust in their fresh food offering,' said Dave Berry, Kantar Worldpanel Ireland's commercial director.
Elsewhere, Tesco saw its Irish sales rise 1.6 per cent to take its market share to 27.1 per cent, while Dunnes saw its market share fall from 23.7 per cent to 23.6 per cent.
