German discount retail groups Aldi and Lidl have further grown their grocery market share in the UK as consumers continue to take a cautious approach to spending amid the current global economical climate.
According to a study carried out by London-based researcher TNS, Aldi's UK market share increased by 0.4 per cent to 3 per cent overall for the 12 weeks ended 10 August, with Lidl's market share growing 0.1 per cent to 2.4 per cent overall.
Despite a series of price cuts, market leader Tesco saw its share drop 0.2 per cent to 31. per cent overall, the researcher reported, while Sainsbury's slipped 0.3 per cent to 15.8 per cent during the period.
Conversely, Asda and Morrisons both saw a 0.2 per cent increase in market share, to 17 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.
In the report, TNS Worldpanel's Ed Garner said: 'Retailers with a clear price message are posting the strongest performances.'
