UK shoppers appear to be trading down to cheaper goods, with the latest retail market share figures from analyst Kantar Worldpanel demonstrating growth for German discounters Aldi and Lidl.

The figures, for the 12-week period ended 7 August, showed that grocery sales increased by 3.8 per cent year-on-year, below grocery price inflation of 5.2 per cent for the same period.

Market share at Aldi climbed from 3 per cent to 3.6 per cent this year, with sales up 24.4 per cent, with Lidl enjoying growth from 2.4 per cent to 2.6 per cent of the market, as sales climbed 13.8 per cent.

'It's evident that shoppers are trying to manage their personal inflation by trading down,' Kantar said in a statement. 'This can be done by seeking out lower-priced outlets and cheaper alternative products.'

However, among the country's 'big four' supermarkets, only Morrisons enjoyed growth in market share, up 0.1 per cent to 11.7 per cent.

Market leader Tesco (down to 30.5 per cent from 30.8 per cent) and second-placed Asda (down to 17.1 per cent from 17.6 per cent) saw falls, while Sainsbury's remained stable at 16.1 per cent of the market.
