Consumption of fresh tomatoes in Germany reached record levels last year, rising 200g to 7.8kg per capita, according to research published by ZMP.
According to the report, an upturn in the amount of tomatoes imported into the country was behind the annual increase.
The total volume imported into Germany in 2007 was around 730,000 tonnes, up 16.7 per cent compared with the 718,000 tonnes which entered the country during the previous 12 months.
Domestic production, meanwhile, also reportedly rose from 54,000 tonnes in 2006 to 64,000 tonnes last year.
