Delhaize Group has said that it will revamp some 250 stores in Virginian markets of Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke and Lynchburg as it continues its year-long makeover programme that will extend to 800-900 stores by the end of the year.

The extensive changes, which include price drops and other changes, follow changes in the Raleigh market that have driven sales gains, Supermarket News reported.

'The solid trends in both customer count and number of items purchased in the Food Lion 'phase one' stores in the Raleigh market continued in the fourth quarter and early this year,' said president and CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers.

'These stores had clearly benefited from the price investments made since they were launched in early May 2011 and from the other attributes of the Food Lion brand which we are strengthening in all of these stores.'
