Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize has started a new initiative in Kortrijk, in West Flanders, allowing two local growers to supply stores direct, according to FreshPlaza.

The trial, which will initially last until early 2013, will see Stephan and Christophe Bosschaert of Wevelgem and Luc Coghe of Heule deliver their produce direct to three of the retailer's outlets.

“By doing this we are trying to serve customers asking for local produce,” said Delhaize's Roel Dekelver. “Also, we like to stimulate local economy. So far, we’re talking about leeks, cauliflower, red and white cabbage.”

Should it prove popular with consumers, Delhaize intends to roll the concept out nationwide in the future.
