Del Monte Freshcut

Del Monte Fresh Produce has voluntarily recalled more than 3,000 fresh-cut fruit items containing red Gala apples grown in Pennsylvania for fear that they may be contaminated with Listeria.

The marketer said the apples have the potential to be affected by Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that is especially dangerous to children, the elderly, and those with weaker immune systems. In rare cases, it can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. No illnesses have been reported so far.

The affected product was distributed to a number of customers in a few states in the north east US, including Giant Eagle, Amazon Fresh, Sunoco, Peter’s fruit, Wegmans, Sheetz and 7-Eleven. They have “Best If Enjoyed By” dates ranging from Dec. 3, 6, 7, and 8 and are included in fruit mixes such as “apple with dip” and “pineapple medley.”

Symptoms of Listeriosis include fever and muscle aches and diarrhoea, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people will only suffer short-term symptoms, such as nausea and abdominal pain.
