It has been revealed this week that Morrisons has ended a £16m (€19.2m) contract with Fresh Del Monte in the UK, which threatens the existence of a facility in the country.

According to just-food, the Morrisons contract represented some three quarters of work carried out at Del Monte's site in York, in the north-east of England.

As a result of the contract loss, Del Monte has informed the more than 100 workers at the facility that it was entering a consultation period to discuss its future plans for the site, with a worst-case scenario being the loss of 140 permanent jobs.

A spokesperson for Morrisons told just-food that the decision to award the contract to a different supplier came after a 'comprehensive product review process'.
