Huelva’s Cuna de Platero has begun harvesting its first commercial crop of strawberries in the province of ávila, an initiative that allows the cooperative to offer its customers berries throughout the year.
Once the high temperatures bring an end to the campaign in Huelva in May, production moves north to Castilla y León, where strawberries are harvested from June to November.
As explained by Cuna de Platero’s managing director Juan Báñez, “the temperatures of northern Spain in summer allow us to continue offering our customers a high quality and flavourful fruit right through the summer season”.
In this way, the company is giving shape to its concept ‘Your Global Berry Partner’, under which its various brands are available to customers all year round, as is already the case with Adelita raspberries.
The company’s 5ha farm in ávila produces strawberries under the same quality and sustainability criteria as those applied to its farms in Huelva, Bañez said.
Báñez described the 2016/17 season in Huelva as “a good campaign in terms of quality and volume of fruit”. He also reaffirmed the company’s social and environmental commitments. For this reason, Cuna de Platero has re-committed to programmes like Bayer's Food Chain Partnership, which covers its entire strawberry production.
In addition, it continues its work under the ‘Innocent Drink’ project to save water during production.
