In an effort to address Dubai’s lack of natural resources and reliance on imports, Italian architects Studiomobile have come up with the Seawater Vertical Farm, which attempts to utilise the emirate’s local resources to create a sustainable source of food, according to Business Intelligence Middle East.
The design reportedly uses seawater to create an ecosystem conducive to growing crops in the clouds, in high-up sky gardens.
Based on seawater greenhouses in Oman and the Canary Islands, the design uses seawater to cool and humidify the air that ventilates multiple greenhouses, while sunlight distils the saltwater into fresh water to nourish thousands of plants.
However, given the current economic situation, reports suggest that the initiative may not be implemented for some time.
