Costco Wholesale Corporation has reported net sales of US$5.9bn for the month of August, the four weeks ended 29 August, an increase of 9 per cent from US$5.4bn in the same four-week period last year.

Net sales for the fiscal 2010 fourth quarter, the 16 weeks ended 29 August, were US$23.6bn, an increase of 8 per cent from US$21.9bn in the 16-week fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 ended 39 August 2009.

Net sales for the 52-week fiscal year 2010 were US$76.3bn, an increase of 9 per cent from US$69.9bn in the 52-week fiscal year 2009 ended 30 August 2009.

Comparable sales for the periods ended 29 August 2010, were as follows:

Inflation in gasoline prices and strengthening foreign currencies had a positive impact on comparable sales.

Costco ended its 52-week fiscal year with 572 warehouses in operation, including 416 in the US and Puerto Rico, 79 in Canada, 22 in the UK, seven in Korea, six in Taiwan, nine in Japan, one in Australia and 32 in Mexico.

Costco said it plans to open up to 10 additional warehouses in the first four months of fiscal 2011, prior to the end of calendar year 2010.
