Facility will handle region’s fruit export to the US

A new phytosanitary inspection site has been inaugurated in Copiapó this week to facilitate the implementation of the Systems Approach protocol for shipments to the US.

So far this season, more than 1mn cartons have already been inspected under the new system.

The new US$800,000 facility was funded by the government and various producing and exporting companies in the region. The 3,650m2 site has 30 inspection tables to ensure compliance with the high phytosanitary standards required by the US market.

There are 7,125ha of table grape production in Atacama, and the region produces around 89,000 tonnes annually, 50 per cent of which are exported from the to the US.
