A newly built container carrier that, at 13,800 TEU, is one of the largest of its kind in the world, has been officially named during a special ceremony at MSC Home Terminal, located at the Port of Antwerp.
The MSC Emanuela, named after Emanuela Borniotto, the daughter of the head of MSC Italcatering, made its maiden trip to Antwerp for the naming ceremony after being built by a Korean shipyard and handed over in September.
According to Antwerp Port Authority, the arrival of the ultra-large container ship (ULCS - 10,000 TEU or greater) again confirms the ability of the port to handle the largest container ships in the world – an ability that will be further improved on the completion of deepening work in the Scheldt this year.
The Emanuela is the 11th ULCS to call at Antwerp since its sister ship, the MSC Beatrice, first visited the port in April 2009.
